Now that you are pregnant, you’ll probably find that your current maternity swimwear no longer fits. Whether it has become extremely uncomfortable, or it just no longer covers the parts you want to cover, It may be time to find something more fitting! Swimming is a sport that can be done even up until the mid stages of pregnancy or nursing postpartum and is great way of relieving pre natal stress. Swimming is an aerobic activity that is safe on your joints and doesn’t strain your ligaments and actually lightens your body weight as you exercise due to your water buoyancy. There are, luckily, some great new styles that look good on a mom to be, and some maternity swimwear companies that design swimsuits specifically for the occasion.
Choosing Maternity Swimwear
There’s no shortage of choice when it comes to choosing maternity clothing and all the main maternity brands produce their own ranges of swimwear for pregnancy. The tankini swimsuit is a very popular style that works great in the second and third trimester, as tankini tops cover bumps without looking plain or dull on pretty much any figure. Tankini maternity swimwear tops and bottoms are often sold separate, so you can pick individual styles to suit both your top and bottom halves. They are also ideal after pregnancy, to cover the bump whilst easing back into your prenatal swimsuit. You can often find Tankinis with what I love to call “cover up accessories”, such as a front tie black sash or front tie bow beneath the bust, to disguise built in nursing access.
Trends in Maternity Swimwear
Each year we see floral prints make an appearance on the catwalk. This year the floral trend continues to be featured on everything from maxi-dresses to jumpsuits to olivon skirts. One great way to work a floral pattern into your wardrobe is through your maternity swimwear. If bright floral prints are typically not for you on a dress or a top, it looks fun and lively at the beach or by the pool. From pastels to deep earthy tones, floral prints of all colors and types look great on swimwear. For moms-to-be, several maternity swimsuit designers have taken this trend very seriously and made some incredible contemporary floral swimsuits.Yet another classic maternity look is the stripe bikini. Ideally, opt for an adjustable halter bikini with a wide band across the top and bottom to give you comfort and style in equal measures. Bikini bottoms are often adjustable on the side to give some more room as you grow. This type of swimsuit is especially made for maternity as it give plenty of room in all the right places. The wide bikini bottom band which fits under the stomach is especially comfortable for growing bellies.
Maternity Swimwear and Cover Ups
Finally, try not to forget your bikini / swimwear cover-up. A versatile all purpose cover-up will often have an adjustable sash tie back and can be worn over any swimsuit, or out casually with jeans or shorts or even a maxi-dress. This cover-up can also be worn after the baby is born and the deep V neck makes for easy nursing access from your maternity swimwear.
